Pool Safety for Pets
Let’s rewind time a little bit and go back to the summer. Back then, your kids and pets probably spent plenty of time splashing around under the sun. But now that the winter off-season has come, it is time to close down your pool until spring returns. Even so, you shouldn’t relax your vigilance when it comes to your pets and pool safety!

Schedule Swimming Lessons

One of the first things you’ve got to do is to schedule some swimming lessons. If you needed them growing up, or if you want your children to take them, then you have some idea of what to expect. This advice mostly goes for dogs – by and large, your cat is going to hate getting into the water. There’s one exception to this – if the pool is empty and kitty is curious about the bare concrete.

Get a Life Vest

When it comes to pool safety, it’s better to be safe than sorry. While this maxim might sound trite, that doesn’t make it any less accurate. Everyone who goes into the pool could benefit from having access to a life vest, not just your pets!

Watch Older Pets

Depending on how old your pets are, they might be more accident-prone. That’s why having pool safety features such as nets and railings can come in handy. Other health problems such as seizures, poor vision, and arthritis can make the edge of the swimming pool a potentially scary place to be. That’s part of why you need to consult your vet about if your pet is still healthy enough to go swimming.

Learn About Pet CPR

Much like people, your pets need CPR, as well. Many people who get into accidents in the pool and lose consciousness will need CPR, but the technique is different for your four-legged friends. That’s why you need to take this into account when you are preparing house rules regarding pool safety.

Put Up a Pool Fence

You can also inquire about getting a pool fence put up. This may be a regulation that your Home Owners Association or neighborhood community association will require. Invisible walls can also help keep your pets safe from falling into the pool without impacting the gorgeous appearance of your swimming pool, even in the doldrums of winter.
